She was lost in a story that would seem insane if you heard it on the street. In her mind, in this moment, that story was utterly real. ‘Of course, we must be careful what we publish, even in the shadows’. Alfred sipped his coffee thoughtfully. ‘On the Merits taught me that. A single word or sentence can set a fire that roars out of control’.

In a nutshell

The Mime Order is the second novel in the Bone Season Series, the first reviewed here. We catch up with Paige Mahoney, now a fugitive in London following her escape from the secret prison city of Oxford. While she may be free of her prison, she is far from free of her captors – Scion. To keep her foothold in the underworld she is forced to return to Jaxon – her charismatic yet brutal employer who wants her to help him with the Rose Crown, a crown Paige wants all for herself.
Book Club Notes

There are books with 300 pages that seem too long, and books with 500+ that seem too short, this is the latter. The Bone Season novels are the novels that made me get fantasy fiction. Each one I read is better, more gripping and spellbinding than the last. They are stories that are imaginatively brilliant and impeccably written. While it took me much quicker to get stuck into the story, having read the Bone Season, this is a story that follows that traditional story arc – slow build, tantalising peak and then a conclusion that leaves you hanging off the cliff, desperate to pick up the next book.
Just one little note, this is a series you need to read in order.
Read If

You like fantasy or want to try fantasy but are looking for something that is more mature and real page turner. But first read The Bone Season.
